Hangstefer, Chapman inch closer to medals

By Nathan Engel Media Writer SOFIA, Bulgaria – Going into their quarterfinal match against Beatriz and Raquel Villamandos-Lorenzo of Spain on Tuesday, U.S. women’s tennis duo Emily Hangstefer and Laura Chapman were determined to make up for a tough outing in singles. For Hangstefer, it was a little shot at redemption for her loss to Beatriz Villamandos-Lorenzo in a battle that lasted more than three hours Monday. “I had a little agenda on my plate after the loss in singles,” Hangstefer said. “So I really wanted to make sure that I was on the winning side this time around.” Chapman was just as motivated, on behalf of her doubles partner. The Americans started off firing on all cylinders, winning the first set by a comfortable margin of 6-1. The second set mirrored the first as Chapman and Hangstefer dominated, 6-2, to seal the straight-set victory. Coach Katie Mancebo had only positive things to say of her team. “They played absolutely great today,” she said. Now, it’s my job to make sure that they stay focused on the task at hand and avoid any mental distractions.” Chapman and Hangstefer advanced to the semifinals, where they are scheduled to play No. 1 Heike Albrecht and Verena Fleckenstein of Germany at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Dema Tennis Center. Also Wednesday, Laura Chapman and Brad Minns take on the No. 1 mixed doubles team of Albrecht and Urs Breitenberger of Germany. Siblings Daniel and Emily Hangstefer play No. 3 seed Sebastian Schaeffer and Fleckenstein of Germany.
